The majority of emails are now read on mobile devices. If you want your email marketing efforts to be effective, it’s essential to create your email campaigns with this in mind! When your emails are optimized for mobile, you’re likely to get more opens, clicks, and eventually conversions.

Ready to dive in? Here’s our guide to mobile-friendly email marketing!
Tip 1: Use Responsive Design
If you’re using an email template, make sure it uses responsive design. Responsive design adjusts the email based on the display it’s being viewed on. This might include changing the email width, font size, or layout (like a multi-column layout moving to a single-column layout). These types of changes ensure that the email displays well on any screen—phone, tablet, or laptop!
Tip 2: Prioritize Accessibility
Most of our tips for social media accessibility also apply to emails. Make sure you caption videos, provide alternative text for images, and use plain language that’s easy to understand. If you like to sprinkle in a few emojis, be sure to follow emoji best practices.
Tip 3: Choose an Easy-to-Read Font
Avoid overly ornate fonts, which can be quite hard to read—especially on mobile. Fonts like Arial, Georgia, and Times New Roman are all popular fonts that are clear and easy to read. As a general rule, body text should be 16px (pixels) minimum.
Tip 4: Optimize Your Images
To prepare an image for email, you can first resize it to your desired dimensions and then compress it to reduce the file size. Download speeds are generally lower on mobile, and most people aren’t going to wait around while a huge file loads. Just don’t compress too heavily, or you’ll sacrifice image quality.
Tip 5: Be Concise
Every inbox is flooded with competition for your audience’s attention. Use a short, catchy subject line that gets to the point—and that won’t get cut off when viewed on mobile! Aim for 40-50 characters. The body of the email should be concise and clear, and you should have a strong call to action that’s visible without much scrolling.
Tip 6: Make It Easy to Click
If your email has convinced someone to check out an offer or book a meeting, the last thing you want to do is introduce friction into the process! Make sure buttons are large enough to tap easily with your thumb—46px squared is a good guideline. If you also use hyperlinks, make sure they’re far enough apart that readers won’t accidentally tap the wrong one.
